The most important and highest position in the herd is the Lord of the Herd. This stag is usually a royal ((having excellent antlers)) and is easily the strongest stag in the herd. Lords usually reign for four to five summers and at Anlach, other stags may challenge him for the position.
Outriders are the corps of young stags that protect and watch over the herd. Some deer may become Captains, a high honor. They are the leaders of the Outriders and are usually respected and admired. It takes quite a lot to become a Captain and they must be ready to risk their lives for the good of the herd.
Every herd has a Storyteller. Although this may not be considered an official rank, they are very important. They pass on the tales from the past and are usually surrounded by the fawns. Storytellers are respected by many, especially the hinds and s/he usually possesses some knowledge of the herbs and berries in the forest.
Stags are the male's of the herd and Hinds or Does are the females. Usually, except during Anlach and the rut, they stay apart but for the sake of this site, they may interact any time.
Fawns are the young of the herd and are usually dropped in spring and sometimes early summer. They stay near their mothers until they become able to run without help. At five Moons of age, a stag will take a fawn into training and they see less and less of their mothers and more of their mentor. They are now called Herlings and at the end of their training, become full Outriders.
